CBD Distillate – The future of cannabis vape pens?

A CBD Distillate is one of the newest trends in cannabis concentrates. That said, although it’s a very new way of refining cannabis oils the methods used actually go back to the 8th century A.D. when Arabic alchemist Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan designed the alembic pot still, a contraption that allowed for the effective distillation of alcohol.

Generally speaking Distillation is a process of separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture by selective evaporation and condensation. In Layman’s terms, you heat and boil your raw alcohol or co2 cannabis extract until the CBD becomes a steam/vapour. The resulting steam evaporates through a condensation chamber where it is rapidly cooled and turned back into an oil again, and not just any oil, a thick golden oil which looks about the same colour as a light honey or syrup. None of the impurities carry over during the process so the resulting extract is clean, potent and 100% natural, there is no need for further chemicals to refine like you do with CBD isolate.

How does CBD distillate compare to other cannabis extracts?

CBD Distillate is the pinnacle for us here at Synergy Extracts, as it is ideal for use in vape-able products, the oil is free from residual lipids/waxes/fats and chlorophyll when compared to the many co2 extracts found across the UK. Co2 extracts can be winterised to remove lipids but it’s very hard to get even close to the level of purity of a distillate. Even with multiple passes through the freezer and lab filtration equipment. Co2 extracts are always done using co2 gas as a solvent and the pressures are pretty extreme. The resulting high pressure forces all sorts of undesirable compounds out of the plant material that are hard to get out, unless distilled.

What’s a solvent?

A solvent is essentially any chemical liquid that dissolves a product into a solution. Propane hash oil (PHO) or butane hash oil (BHO) are produced with extraction methods that use these specific elements to extract the raw oil from the plant.
But solvents like BHO and Co2 typically leave residues, impurities and microscopic amounts of unwanted materials in the end product. Cannabis distillates, however, are created using a short path distillation technique that differs from typical solvent extraction. Heat vaporizes THC and CBD, bringing the vapor into a cooling system for consolidation and eventual collection into beakers. This process is repeated over and over again to create pure cannabinoids without chlorophyll, plant matter or residual solvents.

Are there any issues with CBD distillates?

One of the biggest problems for us and many across the world with CBD distillates is that they crystallise and solidify(rather than remain a syrup consistency)when they are of a purity above 60-70% CBD. This causes a MASSIVE problem when used in vape pens and cartridges because you fill them up with a beautiful golden honey oil and two days later they are solid and crystalline, this will not “flow” or “wick” onto the coil, causing a dry burn( not to mention the waste of the expensive and delicious extract).

So how do Synergy use CBD distillates in our DabPro® concentrate vaporiser?

They key is?….Terpene content!. It took the best part of a year to perfect our new range of luxury CBD vape carts. Meticulous research and testing was the key. Preventing the CBD distillate from re-crystallisation through the manipulation of terpenes, all while remaining palatable and delicious in flavour was not an easy task, but… we cracked it and now have 3 stable, and highly effective varieties of High Terpene Distillate vape oil to go into our high performance DabPro® vape pen. Which can be found by clicking here.

Because of the extended extraction and refinement process, as well as advanced machinery needed to produce distillates, it’s no surprise that they are typically more expensive than other concentrate varieties. The extreme level of purity and potency cannot be compared to different concentrates though, which is why we think every concentrate connoisseur should give them a try.
